Another Fine Day for the Village Golf Competition Fine weather always seems to be the “norm” when the Brightwell-cum-Sotwell Golf Society meets for its twice-yearly competitions. The 9th meeting held at the Springs GC was no exception using the individual Stableford format. Glorious conditions prevailed after several days of poor weather. There was very little wind, lots of sun and the greens were fast but true. Our congratulations go to David Fox (pictured) who won the Individual Challenge Cup with 40 points and also the Nearest The Pin Competition. Simon Hunt was second with 39 points and Geoff Cordey was third with 38 points. David Dobbin achieved the longest drive for men and Jenny Robertson the longest drive for the ladies. Tony Stapleton presented the prizes at a very convivial dinner that was held afterwards in the Club House. Everyone agreed it was a great day and a wonderful way to meet up with other like-minded villagers and have some fun. The Autumn meeting is again being held at Goring and Streatley GC on Friday September 28th at 2pm.
Sarah Wintle’s Team win Florida Scramble The 8th meeting of the Brightwell-cum-Sotwell Golf Society was held on Tuesday September 26, 2006 at Goring & Streatley Golf Club. Remarkably this is the 8th occasion on which our meeting has enjoyed glorious sun, little wind and greens that were fast but true – ideal for good 3 and 4 ball team scores in a Florida Scramble Competition (Florida being an exciting alternative to the more familiar Texas Scramble). In the end after a close struggle between the 6 teams it was appropriate that Sarah Wintle’s 4 ball team of Guy Dexter, Roy Thorpe and David Fox should prevail and win first prize after all Trevor Wintle’s excellent efforts to get such a good arrangement for the Village Society. Many thanks Trevor. Second prize was won by the 3 ball team consisting of Gerard Varley, Jenny Robertson and Gary Kent. A wonderful day was then celebrated and enjoyed with a fine convivial supper in the Club House where Tony Stapleton welcomed Alistair McIntyre as a new member of the Society and Alistair Butt was then (agreeably) co-opted on to the Committee. Gerard Varley presented the prizes and Jim Sanger, our residential Press Photographer, took the pictures. The next meeting is being held on Tuesday June 5, 2007, at the Springs Golf Club. I shall be circulating details approx 6 weeks before the event but in the meantime any player of whatever standard (no handicap required) who would like to join the other 50 members and enjoy our now famous reputation for an almost guaranteed day of sun and fun please contact me on 01491 837245.
