University of the Third Age U3A stands for the University of the Third Age: University in the sense of a group of people devoted to learning, and Third Age that the members have passed full-time employment. Wallingford U3A was started 22 years ago, and when its membership reached 150 it was instrumental in forming the second U3A, now called Thameside. The talks at our monthly meetings cover a wide range of historical, geographical, technical and sociological topics and include some light-hearted interludes. All meetings are in the afternoon. Both U3As have many small interest groups which meet on a regular basis in members’ homes including languages, book reading, films, genealogy, computing, music, rambling, gardening, bird watching, bridge, history and many others according to the interests of our members. We also organise outings in most months including visits to local places of interest, castles, gardens and foreign countries. Wallingford U3A have recently been given a grant to purchase up-to-date projection equipment. We share a common objective - we wish, as our years pass by, to keep our brains active. We enjoy doing this in the company of people of our own age.
