The War Memorial

One summer evening in 1914, a small stage was erected in the middle of The Square, and a man who would one day be Lord Wittenham made a rousing speech urging all fit young men to join up.

A total of 26 young men from Brightwell and Sotwell were among the millions killed in the First World War. Their names are inscribed on the war memorial that now stands in the place where Lord Wittenham made his speech. On the base of the memorial are names from the 1939-45 war.
