BRIGHTWELL ART CLUB
Relaxing Saturday mornings to develop your art, right here in the Village
The Brightwell Art Club meets from 10am until 12 noon on Saturday mornings, normally during term time, at the Stewart Village Hall. Each art session is friendly and relaxed, where members either follow a tutor-led workshop, or develop their own work (with as much or as little advice from the tutor as they want/need). With a nice selection of tea, coffee and a well stocked biscuit tin, there is a lot to like about these regular art sessions throughout the year.
Anyone interested in joining the Brightwell Art Club is welcome to a free first session, with term fees being very reasonable.

The beginnings
The Club was started by Sylvia and Tony Cox of Mackney Lane in 1994. When Sylvia and Tony left Brightwell in 1998 they handed over the reins to Olive Sutcliffe who managed the Club until 2009, after which it has been managed through an active, volunteer committee. Since its inception, a waiting list has been in place and the Club remains a popular part of this vibrant village.
In 1995, as part of the village’s WW2 Victory celebrations, the Club mounted a small exhibition in the Village Hall. The war-time themed paintings were not for sale but so many people asked if they were for sale, the idea of an annual exhibition was born. This has become an established annual event.

Sessions and membership
The Club holds three ‘terms’ (January to March - Winter term; April to July - Summer term; and September to November - Autumn term). Each session within a term is led by a tutor.
We have a rotating schedule of tutors, who are all engaging and bring their own style to the different subjects and techniques they lead. Subjects range from painting en plein air, to different ways to get that light and airy watercolour painting, to pastel, mixed media and highly textural art. The tutors do consider suggestions/requests from the membership and, if possible, incorporate them.
Experience across our members ranges from beginners to more experienced and we have members who live in Brightwell, but also many who come from surrounding villages and towns. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits of being a member
Aside from having the opportunity to learn new techniques and hone skills, each session provides members the opportunity to meet new people from different walks of life. With the diversity of experience and knowledge across the membership and tutors, review and feedback on art produced during sessions is also provided and can be incredibly valuable.
The Club has developed a library of books (and a few back copies of art magazines) that members can either borrow or use during sessions. The Club also has an art box, with a variety of materials that members can use if they do not have what they need for a session, or for members to experiment with before needing to fully invest in a particular medium.
As mentioned already, each year, the Club holds an Art Exhibition, where members have the opportunity to showcase their work and hopefully sell some of their masterpieces. It is a nice time to come together to view what everyone has created over the preceding year, as well as raise funds for the Club and for charities.
If you think you would like to develop your talents with other artists or try a new hobby, email brightwellart@gmail.com or pop along on Saturday, during term time, to see what we get up to and meet some of the members. We would love to see you.
